Alaeddin Mosque, which dates back to the Anatolian Seljuk Period, is Konya's largest and oldest mosque. It is located on Alaeddin Hill, which is a high mound in the center of the city. Its construction began in the latter years of the Seljuk Sultan Rükneddin Mesud, proceeded under the reign of Kılıçarslan II (1156-1192), and was finished and dedicated to worship by Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad in 1221. It is made up of 41 stone marble columns from the Byzantine and Classical eras. In front of the tile-decorated mihrab, there is a space covered with a tile-decorated dome. The mihrab and dome tiles have been largely disassembled.
